Gateway Sign Gets Green Light in Seabrook

SEABROOK, TX – May 19, 2011 – The City of Seabrook is joining area municipalities within the Houston port region by participating in Project Stars, a master-plan initiative that marks the area's rich historical past and celebrates its ongoing prosperity. Seabrook's involvement, led by the Seabrook Economic Development Corporation, took another step forward with the approval of a construction contract by city council.

As part of Project Stars, Seabrook will be constructing a community gateway, a distinctive welcome sign that frames the view of Galveston Bay. "The Seabrook Gateway will be located on 10th Street and visible from State Highway 146," stated Ernie Davis, President of the Seabrook EDC. "As one component of our $7 million Waterfront Drive Improvement Project, the Seabrook Gateway design brings together elements of Texas Independence and regional pride."

While the design incorporates elements found in all participating city gateways, including select masonry and a replica of the star located atop the San Jacinto monument, the Seabrook Gateway design will also reflect the city's nautical heritage. Some of the other participating municipalities include La Porte, Baytown, Deer Park, Morgan's Point, Jacinto City and Pasadena.

The San Jacinto Texas Historic District is spearheading the community gateways through a major initiative that includes innovative urban landscaping, unique image enhancement techniques and strategic economic development focusing on untapped historical resources. The Seabrook Gateway is also intended to serve as an entry to The Point, an area well-known for its rustic shrimp boats and fresh seafood markets.

Seabrook is receiving grant funds to support a significant portion of this effort. The Economic Alliance Houston Port Region is providing $73,000 in funding, and the Houston-Galveston Area Council is contributing $25,000 through its Downtown Public Spaces Grant Fund.

"Construction on our gateway will begin imminently," added Davis. "We are excited to be a part of this improvement initiative that honors the conclusion of the Texas Revolution and showcases the region's influential role in energy, transportation and industry." Davis anticipates that the gateway will be complete by the end of 2011.
