Seabrook and the surrounding Bay Area Houston region are home to numerous thriving industry sectors, including:
Aerospace | Maritime | Bioscience/Biotechnology | Health Care | Chemicals & Plastics | Tourism
Seabrook neighbors NASA’s Johnson Space Center, home of the U.S. astronaut corps and Mission Control. In addition, Bay Area Houston represents the largest concentration of aerospace companies outside of California. The region is a hub for international aerospace leaders who work to support many of JSC’s programs, namely the International Space Station. In all, approximately 18,000 people work in the local aerospace sector.
Back to topSeabrook’s maritime industry is rooted in the Bayport Container and Cruise Terminal (part of the Port of Houston Authority). A $1.4 billion facility, the complex triples the Port of Houston’s container handling capacity and accommodates up to 1.7 million cruise passengers. When it’s fully completed, it will generate more than 32,000 jobs and add approximately $1.6 billion to the Texas economy. In addition, with its 11 miles of waterfront, Seabrook is home to the third largest concentration of pleasure boats in the United States. There are four marinas and more than 1,250 boat slips in Seabrook alone. Plus, Seabrook offers direct access to Galveston Bay, allowing people to sail from sheltered berth to open water within five minutes.
Back to topApproximately 2,900 people in the Bay Area Houston region work in the bio sector, with a concentrated representation in the medical device, biometrics and basic bioresearch sectors. In fact, the region accounts for 15% of all bio jobs in Houston. The key to the region’s strength in the bioscience/biotechnology sector stems from the bioastronautics program at the NASA Johnson Space Center. NASA is forming new research contracts with entities such as the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston to develop new vaccines, drugs and marketable healthcare products.
Back to topSeabrook is within a few minutes’ drive to a booming health care industry that ranges from primary care and preventive medicine to oncology and organ transplantation. There are seven, full-service hospitals in the region, each employing between 350 to 1,500 physicians and other health care providers. Plus, Seabrook is located exactly half-way between two major health care meccas – the world-renowned Texas Medical Center in Houston and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
Back to topThe specialty chemical sector is one of the main pillars of the regional economy, employing approximately 8,700 people. These facilities produce many everyday items, including plastic bottles, cleaning agents and grocery bags. Most of the industry is situated in the Bayport Industrial District, which is located in the neighboring cities of Pasadena and La Porte. Chemicals and plastics accounts for a regional economic impact of more than $829 million.
Back to topEach year, approximately 3 million tourists from around the world visit Bay Area Houston. Seabrook especially is known for its numerous birding and wildlife trails, making the city an eco-tourism haven. Plus, the area is deemed “the boating capital of Texas,” offering boat tours, charters, dinner cruises and more.
