The Seabrook Gateway project is part of a collaborative effort that brings together the various port region communities. As part of the San Jacinto Texas Historic District, the gateways are an element of an overall master plan that includes innovative urban landscaping, unique image enhancement techniques and strategic economic development focusing on untapped historical resources.
The Seabrook Gateway will be located on 10th Street and frame the view of Galveston Bay, while still being visible from S.H. 146. The gateway is also intended to serve as an entry to The Point, an area well-known for its fish markets, shrimp boats and seafood markets.
While the design incorporates elements found in all participating city gateways, including select masonry and a replica of the star located atop the San Jacinto monument, the Seabrook Gateway design will also reflect Seabrook's nautical heritage. Some of the other participating cities include La Porte, Baytown, Deer Park, Morgan's Point, Jacinto City and Pasadena.
Seabrook is receiving grant funds to support a significant portion of this effort. The Economic Alliance Houston Port Region is providing $73,000 in funding, and the Houston-Galveston Area Council is contributing $25,000 through its Downtown Public Spaces Grant Fund. With final award approval scheduled for April, Seabrook EDC anticipates that the gateway will be substantially complete by the end of summer 2011.
